Dental implants are metal studs that are inserted into the jawbone in place of missing teeth. They are known to be the strongest and sturdiest oral restorations as they are not just held in position with the help of dental adhesives. Instead, they are fixed to the jawbone, making them unique and highly sought-after by both dentists and patients.
An implant stud is made from Titanium. It would have screw-like grooves on its surface which help the dentist secure it firmly in place. The size of the implant stud would be more or less the ideal size of a tooth root. On the top, a part of the implant would be exposed after inserting in place. This will be used to mount the tooth crown with the help of a connecting element called the abutment and dental adhesives.
The candidacy for getting a dental implant has to be satisfied before the dentist going ahead with the treatment. Some of the factors that would be considered are jawbone health, size, oral diseases, gum health, presence of cavities, drifting of teeth, overall health condition, spacing available for the implant stud, etc. Based on the conditions you satisfy, your candidacy will be decided.
Since the surgery would be performed on the jawbone, local anesthesia will be administered prior to starting the procedure to numb the teeth, gums, and jawbone. A hole will be made on the jawbone using sophisticated and highly-precise dental instruments. The implant stud will then be inserted in place and allowed to heal for a few weeks. During this, the jawbone would grow around the grooves of the implant stud and the gums would grow around it.
What are implant restorations?
The tooth restorations that we place on the metal implant stud are called implant restorations. We have two types of implant restorations, namely implant crown and all-on-4 implant dentures. When you have just one or two teeth to be replaced, then implant crowns would be the best option. But, if a large number of teeth are to be replaced, getting implant dentures would be the most economical, stable, and long-lasting restorative option.
What are implant crowns and dentures?
Implant crowns are individual tooth-like restorations that are made from ceramic material. They would be connected to the implant stud using the abutment and dental cement. All-on-4 dentures are also referred to as implant dentures. They are an alternative to conventional dentures and would be held in place by means of 4 dentures placed on the dental ridges. The dentist secures them firmly on the implant studs, thereby replacing all the teeth on an entire ridge.
